Between October 6-10, reaching the Coal Mine tour entrance requires a slight detour though the Yellow Stairs. Follow signage onsite and arrive a few extra minutes early.

What to expect

Nothing brings home the work of mining like seeing and hearing the real, working equipment once used in active mines. Gain a new perspective on energy as you witness the mechanical might and engineering ingenuity that goes into harvesting coal. As much as coal mining has changed since 1933, the classic experience of a Coal Mine visit remains one-of-a-kind. This tour is not included with General Admission and requires a separate timed-entry ticket. Tours occur every 30 minutes and last about 25 minutes, including a question-and-answer session at the conclusion.

Parents of young children: during this tour you will walk through a darkened underground exhibit that features loud noises, a short ride on a train car and explanations of the conditions in historic mines.
