Building access
Entering through Museum garage
Oversize and van-accessible parking spaces are located in our underground parking garage's Blue (D) section, which offers:
- Height clearance from 8'2" to 7'2" (check signs for height at specific locations)
- Automated push-button Museum entry door for easy access
- Elevators to and from Museum Entry Hall
Accessible parking spaces are available in all other garage sections, where height clearance is 6'6". Elevators provide access to the Entry Hall from each parking level.
DISCLAIMER: Please note the Griffin MSI underground garage is the only Museum-owned parking for guests. The metered self-parking east and south of the Museum building on Columbia Drive are managed by Standard Parking (312-742-7667) who should be contacted with questions or concerns about these lots.
Entering through main pedestrian entrance
There are curb cuts in front of Accessibility features at the Museum’s main pedestrian entrance include:
- Curb cuts for easy wheeled access
- Push-button entry doors
- Revolving doors
- Elevator and stair access to Entry Hall ticket counters
Inside the Museum
Throughout the Museum, accessibility features include:
- Elevators and ramps providing access to all floors
- Accessible toilet stalls in all restrooms
- Designated seating for guests using wheelchairs and their companions in The Giant Dome Theater, with an elevator providing access to this seating.
Mobility devices
Use of the following mobility devices is permitted in all public areas of the Museum:
- Wheelchairs, including manual or electric single seat chairs
- Electric mobility seated scooters
- Walkers
- Crutches
- Canes
- Braces and similar devices
Explore exhibit-specific mobility details
The Museum prohibits the use of any other types of manually operated or power-driven mobility vehicles, including but not limited to:
- Segways
- Self-balancing two-wheeled electric scooters (a.k.a. hoverboards)
- Wagons
- Tricycles
- Carts
If your mobility device is not permitted, manually operated wheelchairs are available for complimentary use with a photo ID. Use our Guest Service request form to reserve a wheelchair.
Additional accessibility considerations
Food allergies and special dietary needs
For allergen information or questions regarding dining menu items, contact our Food Service Team. Please note that our kitchens are not allergen-free. Guests with special dietary needs or who suffer from sensitive or life-threatening food allergies may bring prepared foods to the Museum.
To ensure the best dining experience at the Museum, please email your inquiry to [email protected] at least two weeks in advance of your visit.
Color vision deficiency
EnChroma Color Blind Glasses are available for individuals with color vision deficiency (CVD). These glasses enable people with red-green color blindness to see an expanded range of clear, vibrant, distinct color and enjoy enhanced detail and depth perception.
Request your EnChroma glasses at the Guest Services Coat Check in the Entry Hall. Glasses are available on a first come, first serve basis, and a form of identification (driver's license, membership card, or student ID) will be held at Coat Check until the glasses are returned.
