About Girls in STEM
Girls in STEM invites girls and youth of diverse gender identities to explore STE(A)M with curiosity and confidence. Through engaging challenges and meaningful conversations with real-world professionals, participants see how big ideas turn into real solutions. Interests connect to possibility, and futures begin to feel both personal and achievable. These fields need bold thinkers and new perspectives and everyone belongs in them.
Interest in STEM
As of 2019, only 34% of STEM professionals were women. Research shows that interest and confidence in STE(A)M often begin to shift during the middle school years, even for students who are capable and curious. Many girls and youth of diverse gender identities encounter barriers that limit visibility and access in these fields. The Ann Drake Girls in STEM Initiative works to remove those barriers by creating welcoming spaces where participants can explore STE(A)M on their own terms and imagine futures that align with who they are and what they care about.
